Location as a Factor on Students’ Achievement in English Language Essay Writing in Senior Secondary Schools using Constructivist-Based Instructional Method (CBIM)

The study focused on location as a factor on students’ achievement in English language essay writing in senior
secondary school in Obio/Akpor local Government Area of Rivers state. One objective, one research question and one
hypothesis guided the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design. The
population of the study comprised all 6,589 SSII students in all the 14 owned Government public schools in the LGA.
The sample size was 207 SSII Students in eight intact classes from four co- educational schools. A validated English
Language essay test (ELET) was used for data collection. The study was guided by one research question and one
hypothesis. The research question was answered using mean and standard deviation while the null hypothesis was
tested using Analysis of co- variance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The outcome of the study showed that
there is a significance difference in the mean achievement scores of students taught English Language essay in
schools located in the urban area as opposed to their counterparts in the rural schools. The recommendations made
include: that teachers in the rural schools should be encouraged to incorporate (CBIM in the teaching of English
language essays; Government should train teachers on the use of Constructivist-Based Instructional method in the
teaching of English language essays.
