Abstract

The study determined the impact of vocational enterprise institutions on employment generation 
among secondary school graduates in South-South States, Nigeria. Two objectives, two research 
questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey design with 
population of 290. The study engaged all the population. Hence, there was no sampling method 
used. The instrument for the study was structured questionnaire in the pattern of Likert-4-point 
rating scale. The instrument was validated by three experts and the reliability of the instrument 
was validated and the reliability of instrument was determined through Cronbach Alpha 
Reliability coefficient. Twenty (20) copies of instrument were administered to 20 instructors and 
trainees in selected areas. Their responses were computed using the Statistical Package for Social 
Science (SPSS) and 0.75 reliability coefficient was obtained. Mean, and standard deviation were 
adopted to analyze the research questions. While t-test was used to the hypotheses at 0.05 level 
of significance. The study reveals amongst others that carpentry and joinery skills, electrical 
installation and repair works have impacts on employment generation among secondary school 
graduates in South-South States, Nigeria. The study therefore, recommended that vocational 
enterprise institutions (VELs) should be encouraged through consistent and higher funding, 
international collaboration maybe encouraged to enhance a more efficient and effective VELs. 
VELs need to be monitored more keenly and ensured compliance to implementation of stated 
policies always. Government stakeholders and the public need to acknowledge and encourage 
locally produced items and ensure that all documents needed to make such product accessible, 
attractive and desirable to the consumers. Needed for production, training and practice are 
available always. Other infrastructures like road, availability of raw material etc. should be 
worked upon.
