Abstract

The study was conducted to ascertain the influence of overschooling on employability of job
seekers among Electrical/Electronics technology graduates in Rivers State. The study adopted
a descriptive survey design with a population of 47 postgraduate electrical/electronic
technology students of Rivers State Government owned universities. The entire 47 students
were employed as sample for the study. Instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire
titled, Overschooling and employability questionnaire. It was validated by three experts and
with reliability coefficient of 0.81 obtained using Cronbach Alpha. Data collected were
analysed using mean for research questions and t-test for the hypotheses. The result of the study
showed that overshooling had negative influence of ability to gain initial employment and to
maintain employment. It was also found that overschooling had negative influence on
possession of skills to transit from one job to another among electrical technology graduates in
Rivers State. Based on the result, it was recommended among others that Instruction and
training activities in institutions of learning should integrate transferable and generic skills in
instructional delivery to enhance job mobility among graduates
