Abstract

The study examined on plumbing skills as an innovative tool for sustainable socio-economic 
development in Nigeria. The study assessed piping skill, water heater installation skills and 
drain cleaning skills as an innovative tool for sustainable socio-economic development in 
Nigeria. The study had three objectives, research questions and hypotheses that guided the 
study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and was carried out in Rivers 
State. The study has a population of fifty respondents which include forty building teachers 
and ten instructors. The study adopted a census sampling technique. This is because the 
population of the study is of manageable size. The study adopted a questionnaire titled 
‘Plumbing Skills Questionnaire’. The instrument was categorized on five-point Liker scale of 
very high extent (VHE), high extent (HE), Undecided (U), low extent (LE), very low extent 
(VLE) with a numerical representation of 5,4,3,2,1. The instrument was subjected to face and 
content validity by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined using 
Cronbach Alpha which gave a reliability coefficient of 0.78. The findings of the study revealed 
that piping skills, water heater installation skills and drain cleaning skills are innovative tools 
for sustainable socio-economic development in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was 
recommended that technical colleges and institutions should use modern equipment and 
instrument in the teaching of plumbing skills as it serves as innovative tools for socioeconomic development.
