Abstract

The study assessed the effect of video teaching aid on students’ academic achievement in block
laying and concreting practice in Government Technical Colleges in Rivers State. Three purposes,
research questions and hypotheses guided the study. A quasi-experimental design was used in this
study. Drawing. The study was carried out in Technical colleges in Rivers State. The experimental
design of the study is symbolically represented as follows: E= Experimental group. C= Control
group. O1= Pre-test. O2= Post-test. Treatment. ≠ No Treatment. The population for the study
comprised 120 National Technical Certificate (NTC) II block laying and concreting students in
the two technical colleges in Rivers State selected for the study. The study adopted purposive
sampling method. The sample size for the study was all the 120 year II block laying and concreting
students in the two technical colleges. One instrument was developed for this study. The block
laying and concreting Test (BLCT). The relative weights of emphasis on the test items are block
laying 25%, concreting skills 25% and building and design skills 25%. An initial pool of 20 items
was drawn up based on the table of specifications or test blue print and sent to three experts for
face and content-validity. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was determined using
Kuder Richardson formula 20 (KR-20). The students’ scores were computed which yielded a
reliability index of 0.65. The findings of the study showed that the mean score for the experimental
group is higher than the control group, indicating that those taught with the video teaching method
performed better in block laying skills in Technical colleges in Rivers State. The findings of the
study showed that the mean score for the experimental group is higher than the control group,
indicating that those taught with the video teaching method performed better in concreting skills
in Technical colleges in Rivers State. The findings of the study showed that the mean score for
the experimental group is higher than the control group, indicating that those taught with the video
teaching method performed better in building drawing and design skills in Technical colleges in
Rivers State. It was recommended that: The use of video that synchronizes text and motion
pictures and equally create a forum for students’ interactions through posting
comments/observations where necessary should be employed by the teachers in technical
colleges. Federal, states and local governments should provide adequate, fast and uninterruptible
internet services for use by technical college students in facilitating the execution of the online
You Tube video instruction.
