Abstract

The study explored the utilization of instructional materials in teaching basic technology in 
secondary schools in Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State. The study has two
objectives, research questions and hypotheses. This study adopted a descriptive survey 
research design. The target population for the study consisted of all the eighty (35) Basic 
Technology teachers and forty (40) secondary school Administrators in Khana local 
government area of Rivers State. The study was a Census as the entire population was 
studied. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Utilization 
of Instructional Materials in Teaching Basic Technology Questionnaire”. The instrument
was structured on five-point Likert type rating scale of Very High Extent (VHE), High 
Extent (HE), Moderate Extent (ME), Low Extent (LE) and Very Low Extent (VLE). A 
corresponding numerical value of 5, 4,3,2 and 1 was assigned to the response scale for each 
item as represented below with real limits. The instrument has a reliability coefficient of 
0.77. Findings of the study showed that the availability of workshop facilities for teaching 
of basic technology were grossly inadequate because of the listed items had less than 50% 
availability. Findings of the study showed that the availability of workshop facilities for 
teaching of basic electricity were grossly inadequate because of the listed items had less 
than 50% availability. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations 
are made; The government to ensure adequate provision of funds to schools to expand basic 
technology facilities most especially the rural areas and for the acquisition of instructional 
materials in secondary school. Basic Technology teachers must make use of instructional 
materials including print and non-printed frequently so as to improve the level of 
understanding among their students. The teachers should embrace the used of teachers made 
material for the effective teaching of Basic Technology in Secondary Schools. Also,
textbooks on Basic Technology should be provided for the student by each of the parents.
