Curriculum Implementation for the Enhancement of Teachers’ Efficiency in Teaching English in Public Junior Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt

The study investigates curriculum implementation for the enhancement of teachers’ efficiency in teaching English in
public junior secondary schools in Port Harcourt. Three research questions with three corresponding null hypotheses
guided the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population for the study is eight hundred
and forty-four (844) Teachers in eighteen (18) Public Junior Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt Local Government
area. A sample of 271 such that male (129) and female (142) teachers of the population were selected, using the Taro
Yamane Formula. The research instrument for data collection in this study was a self-structured questionnaire titled,
Curriculum Implementation for Efficiency in Teaching Questionnaire (CIETQ) by the researcher which was validated.
The data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions. The criterion
decision rule is that any mean score that was from 2.50 and above was regarded as high extent while the mean score
that was less than 2.50 was regarded as low extent. The null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistical tool at a
significance level of 0.05. From the results of the analyses, it was found that there is no significant difference between
the responses of the male and female teachers on the extent their knowledge of the Basic English Curriculum, teaching
methods used by English Teachers, availability of instructional materials, enhance Teacher’s efficiency in teaching
English in Public Junior Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt. It was recommended that there is need for English
teachers to have adequate knowledge of the Basic English Curriculum, know the appropriate teaching methods, only
qualified teachers should be allowed to teach English language
