Abstract

The study focused on supervisory skills need for optimum performance of students in industrial work experience scheme in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Three objectives, research questions and hypotheses guided the study. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The study was carried out in Rivers State. The population for the study was 120 respondents, comprising 80 Senior lecturers and 40 Junior Lecturers in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State. The study adopted census as the entire population will be studied. A structured questionnaire instrument was used to collect data for this study titled ‘supervisory skills and industrial work experience scheme Questionnaire (SSIEESQ)’. The instrument was structured on four point response options of Strongly agree (SA), agree (A), undecided (U) disagree (D) and strongly disagree (SD) with values of 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively for each one. The instrument was face-validated by three experts. The study had 0.88 reliability index. Finding of the study shows that pedagogical skills are needed for optimum performance of students in industrial work experience scheme in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Find of the study shows that evaluation skills are needed for optimum performance of Students in industrial work experience scheme in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Finding of the study shows that motivational skills are needed for optimum performance of students in industrial work experience scheme in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Findings of the study shows that managerial skills are needed for optimum performance of students in industrial work experience scheme in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Base on the findings of study, the following recommendations were made: Supervisory Personnel at the in tertiary institutions should take their responsibilities seriously by engaging on educational activities that could enhance their skills. These include, among others, strategic seminars, workshops, regular visits and exchange programs pursuit of higher educational qualification, etc.  Supervisors that excel in their assignment should be rewarded accordingly either in kind or cash. It was therefore recommended that there is need for collaboration between teacher tertiary institutions and industries in improving the quality of training, so that prospective graduates are equipped to take proper measures to influence teacher job performances.
