Abstract

The study developed capacity building module for skill acquisition of trainees’ in machineshop
practice in Technical Colleges in Rivers State. Two objectives, research questions and hypotheses
guided the study. The study adopted Research and Development (R & D) design. The population for
the study was 200 which comprised all the 100 teachers and 50 instructors from Technical colleges in
Rivers State and 50 supervisors in industries located in Rivers State. The entire population was used.
A structured questionnaire titled: Capacity building Module Questionnaire (CBQ) was used as
instrument for data collection and was on 5-point Likert scale. practical skills instructional module
questionnaire was developed based on the specific purposes of the study. The instrument was
subjected to face and content validity by four experts/validates. Cronbach alpha reliability method
was used in determining the internal consistency of questionnaire items which gave 0.73 reliability
index. The findings of the study showed that the respondents agreed on the objectives of the practical
skills instructional module to enhance students’ performance in mechanical engineering craft practice
in Technical Colleges in Rivers State Nigeria. The findings of the study showed that the respondents
agreed on the turning and Shaping, planning and slotting skills module to enhance students’
performance in machineshop practice in Technical Colleges in Rivers State Nigeria. Based on the
findings of the researcher, the following recommendations were made: Mechanical engineering craft
teachers in Rivers State States technical colleges and similar skill acquisition institutions should be
alerted and make use of the mechanical engineering craft practice instructional module to assess
students’ practical skills in mechanical engineering craft practice. This will ensure that students’ level
of competence will be known and areas where improvements need to be made can be worked on.
National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) and similar examination bodies
should consider using the mechanical engineering craft practice instructional module in assessing
practical components of students’ performance at NTC level and other examinations at post- primary
level
