Abstract

The study investigated the acquisition of work skills in radio and television repair for
youth empowerment in Rivers State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses
guided the study. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A structured
questionnaire of 50 items with five-point rating scale was used as the instrument for the
data collection from the population of 250 comprising 20 technical instructors in
electronics communication in the various technical institutions in the state and 10
unemployed youths from each local government area of the state summing up to 230
unemployed youths that are science oriented and between the age of 20- 30 years. The
instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was
determined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Method to obtain a correlation
coefficient of 0.85. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data in relation
to the research questions. While the mean values were used to provide answers to the
research questions, the standard deviation was employed to show the closeness in
response opinions of the respondents. The z-test statistics was used to test the null
hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that acquisition
of work skills in radio and television for youths empowerment will create skill
development by promoting employment creativity and sustainable means of living.
Hence, reducing poverty among the youths. Based on the findings, it was recommended
that government should provide functional skills acquisition centres in all local
government areas in the state, creation of industrial awareness in electronics
communication and attachment of financial benefit for entrepreneurial establishment in
electronics communication among the youths.
