Lecturers’ Competency on Online Assessment in Rivers State Owned Universities

The study, investigated lecturers’ competencies on online assessment in Rivers State owned universities. Two research
questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the conduct of the study. The population of the study
comprised 579 lecturers in the faculty of education in the two universities in Rivers State. Simple random sampling by
balloting was used in selecting the sample of 120 lecturers for the study. The instrument for data collection was designed
by the researcher and titled "Lecturers’ Online Competency Scale (LOCS) ". The reliability of the instrument was 0.80,
which is significant at 0.05 level of significance and therefore reliable for the study. Descriptive statistical tools were
used in testing the two research questions. T-test was used to test hypothesis 1 while ANOVA was used to test hypothesis
2 at 0.05 level of significance. The researcher observed that (I) there was no significant difference in lecturers’ mean
rating on online assessment competencies in Rivers state owned Universities based on gender (2) there is significant
difference between lecturers mean rating on online assessment competence in Rivers State own university based on rank.
Based on the findings, the researcher made recommendations that there should as a matter of policy; include lecturers’
online assessment of students as a condition for appraisal and assessment of academic performance and that there is also
need for IRs to adopt gender and rank sensitive processes, information and communication technology facilities in order
to stimulate and enhance lecturers’ online assessment of students’ outcome.
