Abstract

This study assessed ergonomic principles compliance by workers of construction companies in Rivers State, to prevent
accident. The objectives of the study were to assess the extent to which the workers comply to keeping everything
within reach, working at proper height and providing clearance to prevent accident. The population for the study was
100 respondents, made up of 50 respondents from mechanical and 50 from building construction companies. To direct
the study, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated. Mean(x) and standard deviation (SD) were
used to answer the research questions, while Z-test was used to analyze the hypotheses at .05 level of significance.
The means (x) of 4.12; and 4.07 showed that the workers comply to keeping everything close. However, the Z-test
analysis of the hypotheses with Z-cal of 0.27 was accepted because it was less than the Z-crit of 1.96, which implied
that there is no significant difference between the mean (x) responses of the workers on the extent to which they
comply to keeping everything within reach. Thus, it was recommended that more training on ergonomic principles
should be given to workers of building construction and mechanical companies to complement their knowledge of
safety rules
