Influence of Cultural Practices on Community Development in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State

Abstract

This study examines the influence of cultural practices on community development in Emohua Local Government 
Area of Rivers State. The research inculcated five objective and research on the Influence of Cultural Practice. The 
population of study was 1,516 members of all the community based organizations in Emuoha Local Government Area 
of Rivers State. A sample size of 464 (306 members and 78 leaders) was randomly sampled. The study was validated 
by researcher’s supervisor and two test experts and the instrument was valid. A questionnaire on the Influence of 
Cultural Practices on Community Development was used for data collection. Five research questions 
and five hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data from questionnaire was analysed using mean and 
standard deviation, while hypothesis was tested using t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Analysis was carried 
out using SPSS (Version 21.0). result showed that there is no significant difference between response of leaders and 
members on influence of cultural practice on community development in Emuoha Local Government Area. Based on 
the finding the following recommendations were made that external agencies, the government and the people 
themselves should carry out mass literacy programmes as a form of community development to increase the literacy 
level of the people as this would help deal with one of the challenges of community development in Emohua Local 
Government Area. Again, the agencies supporting community development programe should involve the people 
from the onset to ensure such programs are in line with the peoples tradition and customs
