Abstract

This study investigated the influence of university autonomy on the administration of public universities in North-Central Nigeria. Two research questions were raised in line with the specific objectives to guide the study. Two hypotheses were also formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study was 25352, comprising academic and non-academic staff from public universities in North-Central Nigeria. The sample size of the study was 394 which determined by the application of Taro Yamane’s formula. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was adopted for the study. Self-structured questionnaire titled ‘Influence of University Autonomy on the Administration of Public Universities Questionnaire” was used as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by five experts, two of whom were from Department of Educational Administration and Planning, two from Measurement and Evaluation, all from Joseph Tarka University, Makurdi and one from Department of Educational Management Benue State University, Makurdi. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha Reliability test and a reliability coefficient of 0.89 was obtained which was considered reliable for the study. Data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while Chi-square of goodness of fit was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that university autonomy has significant positive influence on the administration of public universities in North-Central Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended that government should grant public universities students’ admission, and conditions of service autonomy to enhance the smooth administration of Public Universities in North-Central Nigeria
