Factors Militating Against Effective Teaching of Basic Science Technology subject in Public Junior Secondary Schools in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State

The study examined the factors militating against effective teaching of basic science technology subjects in public junior secondary schools in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. Four objectives, four research questions guided the study. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. This study was carried out in Rivers State, whose geopolitical zone is South-South, which is one of the 36 states of Nigeria. The population of this study consisted of 621 comprising of 11 Basic Science Technology teachers and 610 Basic Science Technology students. The Simple Random Sampling Technique was used to select 131 respondents comprising of 11 teachers and 121 students. The instrument for data collection was a well-structured questionnaire titled “Factors that militate against the effective teaching of Basic science and technology subject in schools in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area in Rivers State” Questionnaire. The instrument was face and content validated by experts in technical education. Test-retest was used to establish the reliability of the instrument which gave 0.79 was obtained. Out of the one hundred and five (105) copies of the questionnaire distributed, one hundred and five (105) copies were retrieved and completely filled representing 100% rate of return. Mean and standard deviation was used for data analysis. Mean response of 2.50 and above was indicated as “agree” while mean responses less than 2.50 was indicated as “disagree”. The study found that students factors, teachers’ qualification, Use of Instructional aid all affected teaching of Basic Science and Technology in the study area. It was recommended that school authorities should ensure that students are best shape to support teaching and learning of Basic Science and Technology. This can be done by informing them of its important and listening to their complaints.
