Influence of Managing Staff Recruitment on Quality Instructional Delivery in Rivers State Owned Universities

Abstract

The study examined influence of managing staff recruitment on quality instructional delivery in Rivers State owned Universities. Three objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The population of this study consisted 5433 lecturers from Rivers State University and 2411 lecturers from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education totaling 7844. The sample size for the study was 380 lecturers consisting of 228 lecturers from Rivers State University and 152 lecturers from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education derived through Taro Yamane’s formula and simple random sampling technique. The instrument for the study was a self-developed questionnaire titled: “Influence of Managing Staff Recruitment on Quality Instructional Delivery Questionnaire” which was validated by three experts, two from Department of Educational Management and one from Measurement and Evaluation. The instrument was tested for reliability using Cronbach Alpha statistics which yielded reliability indexes of 0.76, 0.78 and 0.82. Mean and standard deviation were used in answering the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using z-test statistics at the 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that to a high extent managing screening and selection influence quality instructional delivery, while to a very high extent managing orientation influence quality instructional delivery in Rivers State owned Universities. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that there should be a well-organized screening exercise for all candidates, and candidates should not bye pass any stage of the recruitment process, Orientation of new members is very important, therefore it should be made mandatory not optional upon job offer.
