The instrument was validated by three experts. The internal consistency of the instrument was determined by using Cronbach Alpha method to determine the reliability of the instruments. Reliability coefficients of 0.85 and 0.82 were obtained for the various clusters of the instrument. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the z-test statistic was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed among others that ASUU has protected academic freedom of academic staff in public universities in Rivers State to a high extent. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that ASUU should strengthen its campaigns for university autonomy and safeguard the independence of academic institutions. The union should also collaborate with national and international academic bodies to resist any form of external interference in university governance and academic activities.
