Abstract

The study examined mobilisation strategies for the participation of community inhabitants in tourism activities in Rivers State. two research objectives, two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 3,859 comprising 3,150 members of community-based organisations and 709 Members of community development committees of Rivers State. The sample size of the study was 640 comprising 352 members of registered community-based organisations and 288 members of community development committees used for the study. Taro Yamane formula was used to determine the sample size while multistage sampling technique was adopted in selecting the sample. Fifteen Local Government Areas were randomly selected. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled, “Mobilization Strategies for the Participation of Community Inhabitants in Tourism Activities Questionnaire”. The face and content validity of the instrument was determined by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Adult Education and Community Development, Rivers State University. The reliability of the instrument was established through a test of internal consistency using Cronbach Alpha method with reliability coefficient (r) value of 0.82. The responses from the two research questions were analysed with mean and standard deviation statistics, while the five null hypotheses were tested with t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that to a high extent, mobilisation strategies such as community members involvement in monitoring and evaluation, and use of traditional media promoted community participation for tourism activities in Rivers State. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others, that Rivers State Tourism Development Agency should engage community inhabitants through regular outreach programmes to educate and engage local communities on sustainable tourism practice.
