This study examined community based resources for promoting sustainable tourism in Andoni and Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Areas of Rivers State. Three research objectives and research questions were used for the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 699 community members comprising 594 members and 105 leaders of registered community based organisations in the study area. The sample size of the study was 406 respondents comprising 301 members and 105 leaders of registered community based organisations. Proportionate stratified sampling technique was adopted in selecting 301 (50%) of the members from each of the registered community based organisations, while all the leaders were taken as census without sampling due to their manageable size. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled, “Community Based Resources for Promoting Sustainable Tourism Questionnaire”. The instrument was validated by three experts in Community Development, and Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was established through a pilot study using the Cronbach Alpha Method. A cumulative reliability coefficient of 0.83 was obtained. The responses from the six research questions were analysed with mean and standard deviation. The findings from the study revealed among others that community based resources such as forest reserves, river banks, and cultural festivals, promote sustainable tourism in Andoni and Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Areas of Rivers State to a high extent. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that Rivers State Tourism Development Agency should partner with community stakeholders to conscientise community members on the need for proper conservation of their mangrove forest to enhance sustainable tourism activities in the community.
