Abstract

Tertiary educational reform is a result of disillusion and dissatisfaction with the existing educational structure in the attainment of educational goals. Educational reforms are geared towards the improvement of the process or methodology of the educational system not only to enhance the development of individuals and society but also the development of the needed manpower. To this effect, the paper discusses tertiary educational reforms in Nigeria, the challenges and the way forward. The thrust of the paper is to examine some of the educational reforms in Nigeria namely the IPPIS, the deregulation of tertiary education and the National University Commission among others and explore how to ameliorate the challenges towards a better service delivery. The paper discourses the challenges inhibiting educational reforms such as misconceived, too ambitious for socio-political situations, poor implementation and misappropriation of funds. The paper asserts that some of the education reforms need to be revalidated to ascertain if it achieving the desired goals. As a way forward, the paper suggests the integration of digital technology and the establishment of more ODL centres as a way to make education more accessible and affordable.
