Influence of Adult Education Programmes on the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 in Abia State, Nigeria

This study examined influence of adult education programmes on the achievement of sustainable development goal 4
in Abia State, Nigeria. two research questions generated from two research objectives were used for the study. two
null hypotheses were tested. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population for the study
was 2833 comprising 2409 adult learners and 424 adult facilitators in the registered adult education centers in the
three Senatorial Districts of Abia State. The sample for the study was 437 comprising 303 adult learners and 132
facilitators in the selected adult education centers studied. Using multistage sampling technique, twelve LGAs and 36
adult education centers were randomly selected, while proportionate sampling technique was used to select the sample
size used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled, “Influence of
adult education programmes on the achievement of sustainable development goal 4 Questionnaire”. The face and
content validity of the instrument were determined by two experts in the field of Adult Education. The reliability
coefficient (r) value of 0.829. for the validated instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha method. The
responses from the two research questions were analysed with Mean and Standard Deviation Statistic, while the two
null hypotheses were tested with t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance with the aid of Statistical Package for
Social Science (SPSS) version 20. The findings from the study showed that to a high extent, adult education
programmes such as environmental education and vocational education have positive influence on the achievement
of inclusive and equitable quality education in Abia State. Based on the findings, the study recommended among
others, that Relevant adult education programmes should be properly planned and funded by government, and other
development agencies as a means of expanding opportunities for equal participation in quality educational
programmes to acquire basic knowledge and skills that has always limited them for equal participation in the
community
