Influence of Adult Education Programmes on the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal Five in Ekpeye Kingdom of Rivers State

The study investigated influence of adult education programme on achievement of sustainable development goal
five (5) in Ekpeye kingdom of Rivers State. The study was guided by three objectives and three research
questions.The study adopted a descriptive survey design with a population of 260 women and girls in Ekpeye
Kingdom of Rivers State. The entire population was studied as a census without sampling. This is due to the
manageable size of the population. A self-structured questionnaire titled “Influence of Adult Education Programme
on Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal Five Questionnaire” was used for data collection in this study.
The instrument was validated by two experts in the field of Adult Education and Community Development. The
reliability of the instrument was established through a test of internal consistency using Cronbach Alpha method.
Reliability coefficients of 0.82, 0.78 and 0.88 were obtained for the various clusters of the instrument which showed
the instrument was reliable. Research questionswere answered using mean and standard deviation. The findings of
the study revealed that functional literacy, human right education and entrepreneurship education influence the
achievement of Sustainable Development Goal five to a high extent. Based on the findings of the study, it was
recommended among others government through the National Mass Education Commission should organize
functional education programmes for women in all the states of the federation to empower women to compete
favorably with their male counterparts.
